Mr Phan Thanh Son

Vu Minh Tri spent many years working as CEO for Sony Ericsson, Yahoo, Qualcomm  Indochina and Microsoft Vietnam before becoming the deputy CEO in charge of cloud computing at VNG.

VNG is a big technology firm. In late May 2017, it stated that it plans to have an IPO on the US’s largest stock market, NASDAQ.

The appointment of Tri was part of the group’s strategy to develop cloud computing into one of the services that have brought major revenue to the group, after a long period of focusing on online games, e-payment and e-commerce.

Before Tri joined the VNG’s staff, Dang Viet Dung, former CEO of Uber Vietnam, also took a post at the group, leading the e-payment division.

Phan Thanh Son is a respected name in the technology community. After many years of working for foreign technology firms, including Cisco Vietnam, Son left and became CTO of FPT Information System.

FPT is the Vietnamese largest IT group.

Ho Thanh Tung, who was CEO of Oracle Vietnam for many years, is now deputy CEO and strategic director of CMC Group. Meanwhile, Vo Tan Long several years ago resigned from his post as CEO of IBM Vietnam to work for VP Bank.

Tri said he wanted to participate in the development of domestic technological solutions.

Asked about  the resignation from the top of a foreign technology to accept the deputy chief post at a Vietnamese firm, Tung said the two positions are different but have close relations.

Managing an international technology group allowed him to concentrate on one field and learn technologies used in developed countries, such as cloud computing, IoT, machine learning and AI.

Vietnamese technology firms such as CMC can help him implement his plans of conducting in-depth research and using technologies in daily life.

Nguyen Trung Chinh, chair and CEO of CMC, confirming that many CEOs have left foreign companies to apply for Vietnamese firms, explained that Vietnamese companies offer a competitive working environment and financial conditions compared with foreign companies.

An analyst commented that Vietnamese CEOs at multinational groups do not do R&D, but mostly focus on selling technological solutions developed by the holding companies.

As key personnel in Vietnamese companies, they have the right to determine the companies’ important strategies and can devote themselves to the development of the country.
