The batch of iPhones, worth some VNĐ6.5 billion (US$290,000), was found on Wednesday in the checked bags belonging to four Americans at the airport.

The owners of the batch of iPhones failed to present legal documents proving their origins.

Mobile phones are among products that require permission from the Ministry of Information and Communications to be imported into the country.

Trần Ngọc Anh, deputy head of the Customs Department at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport, said that mobile phones also require quality check certificates as part of customs procedures.

“If the traveller carries more than two phones and they have a total value of more than VNĐ20 million ($900), then the traveler must pay the tax and undergo the quality check procedure.”

The latest iPhone model is not yet officially sold in Việt Nam.

The customs forces at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport said they have deployed many professional measures and strengthened work to detect smuggled and illegally transported goods, and especially to avoid the smuggling of goods that have not yet been officially imported into Việt Nam.

The case is under investigation.
