The HCM City Department of Education and Training has instructed schools to remain open, including their libraries so that students can visit and read books.

Schools are also required to provide lessons on sports including basketball and football, and clubs are expected to continue operations during the summer.

Moreover, the department has required the schools to teach swimming and drowning-prevention skills during the summer.

In addition to these activities, the People’s Committee will organise a campaign for disadvantaged children in the city and a forum to listen their needs.

A programme called Enjoying Summer with Books will be held on the Book Pedestrian Street on Nguyễn Văn Bình Street in District 1 from June 1 to August 12. It aims to establish lifelong reading habits for children.

In the programme, children will be also be taught how to draw comic books and make pottery. They will play games related to science, technology, engineering and maths.

Youth Union

The Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union in the city is giving 90 free film shows in city districts.

The union will also offer programmes to improve living and social skills for children; 50 playgrounds for science activities; and seven camps for children of workers.

The city for the first time will organise playgrounds for workers’children in residential areas and apartment buildings in districts 6, 7, 12, Tân Phú, Nhà Bè and Bình Chánh.

In these same areas, volunteer students are helping children review academic subjects they have studied at school.

Children of soldiers on duty on the Trường Sa (Spratly) Islands, about 248 sea miles from Cam Ranh City in the central province of Khánh Hòa, will also be given priority to attend summer programmes organised by the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union.

Most cultural and sport centres for children and teenagers in the city’s districts are offering courses in drawing, dancing, singing and other skills.

Government agencies and organisations as well as companies and English centres are organising many programmes to help children have fun during the summer.

The Vietnam USA Society English Centers (VUS), for instance, are carrying out the Summer Start Contest, which started on May 21 and will end on July 18, and the V-IDOLS singing competition of English songs from June 7 to July 13 for its students.
