Prolonged downpour submerges Ho Chi Minh City

The torrential rain lasted from 6:00 pm to about 10:00 pm on May 19. Many streets in Ho Chi Minh City were severely inundated due to a prolonged downpour that started on Saturday evening and lingered until late at night, causing difficulties for commuters and local residents.

The heavy rain began at around 6:15 pm and quickly submerged multiple routes across the southern metropolis, namely Nguyen Xi and Ung Van Khiem in Binh Thanh District, Phan Huy Ich and Cay Tram in Go Vap District, Huynh Tan Phat in District 7, and Ho Hoc Lam in Binh Tan District.

Commuters faced immense challenges when traveling along the flooded streets as their vehicles were likely to break down.

At inundated intersections such as Xo Viet Nghe Tinh - Ung Van Khiem, traffic police officers were mobilized to control the traffic under the downpour.

Floodwaters also poured into many houses.

According to the Ho Chi Min City Urban Drainage Company, the highest rainfall was recorded at 102 millimeters at Phu Lam Station in Binh Tan District.

Over 10 areas across the city were submerged due to the rain, the firm added.

It was still raining at 9:30 pm on the same day, creating difficulties for residents on their way home.
