Six major theatres in Vietnam participated in the festival this year under the Green Dream theme. Tourists had the chance to explore various types of puppetry and enjoyed perfomances of both water and regular puppetry. There were five small stages for rod string puppets, shadow puppets, or boi singing.

The festival director and deputy head of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vuong Duy Bien said, "We hoped the festival will become an indispensable cultural event for the people in HCM City and introduce traditional puppetry to international tourists, making it a major characteristic of the city."

Linh Hien, an artist at Boi Singing Theatre in HCM City also hoped that young people would understand and enjoy the traditional singing more.

Vietnam Puppet Theatre opened the festival with The Country's Soul performance which combined traditional puppetry and installation art. The performance won the gold medal at the first International Puppet Festival held in Hanoi in 2008.
