HCM City gig to honor late musicians

Nghin Trung Xa Cach will celebrate late musicians Pham Duy, Van Cao and Doan Chuan on March 2 at 8 p.m. at Hoa Binh Theater at 240 Ba Thang Hai Street in District 10.

Organizers Nam Sao Media, AnhDuyAudio, Lioa and Non Son aim to honor popular songwriter Duy who passed away in late January after years of suffering from heart and liver disease and gout. And there will also be songs from his big friends and colleagues Van Cao and Doan Chuan who set the foundation for Vietnam’s music industry.

The trio’s songs will be sung by Anh Tuyet, Thanh Lam, Hong Nhung, Tung Duong, Duc Tuan and the top three finalists of Voice of HCMC Television contest in 2013 and Cadilac group.

The concert will be directed by musician Phu Quang and saxophonist Quyen Van Minh and young musician Tran Minh Tuan will be in charge of music editing.

Quang will mix all the works by Duy to pay his respect to the late musician.

Popular saxophonist Tran Manh Tuan will infuse new spirit into old songs by Jazz/New Age melodies. HCMC Ballet Symphony and

Orchestra, 16-chord zither artist Hai Phuong, Meritorious Artist Dinh Ha Linh (flute) and Meritorious Artist Co Huy Hung (monochord) will also contribute at the event.

Tuan aims to bring a new language of music to interact with audiences by new mixing styles and arrangement techniques. Popular poet Do Trung Quan will be the event’s MC.

Tickets are priced at VND200,000, VND400,000, VND600,000, VND800,000, VND1.4 million, VND1.8 million and VND2.2 million.

Duy, born in Hanoi on October 5, 1921 as Pham Duy Can, had a musical career spanning more than seventy years and is widely considered one of the three most influential figures in modern Vietnamese music, along with Cao and Trinh Cong Son.

He and his family settled in Orange County, California in 1975 after the Fall of Saigon but he returned to Vietnam in the late 1990s and in 2005 decided to spend the remainder of his life in HCMC.
